The early drafts had green faces, the second below is the one Gay put in the "Finished artwork" folder. Her own hand didn't look like that anymore, it had the curled shape shown in other portraits. The green seems to have been envy.
But she moved away from that idea, and went for a more natural look with a more ambiguous, less negative meaning.
The version at the top of the page is how it would have looked with the natural face color before being lightened for printing. The one below is the one for the printer.
