Gay spent a lot of time working on the detail in the skirt, which has dapples of sun (pink and orange) and shade (purple).

She loved to keep flowers in her kitchen windows. An early title was "woman with tulips," a flower she grew in the yard.

Some of these pieces have lines with intentionally rough textures. The process of resizing them for printing generally smoothed that out some. The version shown above preserves the roughness of the original from before it was resized (which may be lost again if your browser resizes it).

She considered a border:

The version at the top of the page has the last colors from before printing except for the lavender top, which was darkened a bit instead of lightened, and looks good that way. This is the version for printing:
