man with hat

ridiculous body blues
4 x 5"

The last piece Gay started that she finished, apparently the last piece she started at all. She did it over a couple days in mid-February right before the pieces were prepared for the printer. With little time to refine or mellow it, this one may retain more of the initial rawness than it would have otherwise.

The piece was actually started in response to an argument with Kent, who can't recall what it was about. As she worked on it her frustrations soon turned back to her physical troubles. The title was drawn from a remark made by a friend, "I don’t know what God was thinking giving you this ridiculous body."

Her devout hope was for her and others to better appreciate the bodies they had, but that didn't prevent her feeling frustration too. In an interview a couple months after she drew this she explained, "It's true that sometimes I feel angry about having this disease, but I don't think that it's affected my art more than, you know, the anger I feel about anything in particular, or the sadness, or the pleasure, or the interest in life."

This is the only piece from the show that has a likeness of Gay's face.

The drafts were just called "ridiculous body." The background color was a light gray with a slight blue tint that showed on some equipment. For the final version she changed the color and added "blues" to the title.
