judy sleeping
5 x 3-1/2"

Gay called this "sleeping girl," but her friend Judy Payne insisted it was really a drawing of her, so Gay changed the name. It was published sideways in the Salt Lake Tribune, making it look like "judy dancing," (or, as some saw it, "judy scratching").

Turned the right way it has an invitingly restful look. Sleep is a theme in a couple others of Gay’s prints too, maybe because she had trouble sleeping.

She completely redrew/traced over it after the first draft below, from 1998, probably to get more control over it in the transition from one program (Dabbler) to another (Phototshop). That was a lot of work, so she must have particularly liked the piece.

The brown one was the last version before the one for the printer, which is the one at the top of the page. Lightened, with more print-friendly colors, and works better on screen too.
